Ambient AI and the clinical note

Ambient AI can prepare draft clinical notes, but the clinician remains responsible for review and approval.

Clinical documentation takes time before, during and after the consultation. Ambient AI systems can transform a conversation into a draft note and suggest codes or next steps. The draft is a starting point for a professional record, not a substitute for clinical judgment.

Design the review step first

Make uncertain statements easy to find. Keep the source conversation and suggested note distinct where appropriate, and let the clinician correct omissions, attribution errors and medication details before signing. Patients should understand how their data is used, subject to applicable consent and privacy requirements.

Test the benefit in the real clinic

Measure time spent documenting, after-hours work, note quality, clinician experience and correction burden. Compare different specialties and consultation types. A system that saves typing but adds verification work may have a smaller net benefit than its headline metric suggests.

Connect it to existing systems

Published evaluations of AI medical scribes examine documentation time and clinician experience in real care settings. The broader lesson is to assess the full workflow: drafting, review, coding suggestions when applicable and an auditable handoff to the health record.
